What is the VAR Transport Scheme?

The scheme provides vital transport for frail elderly, disabled and housebound people who need a lift in order to keep essential appointments, e.g shopping, doctor, dentist and hospitals. The majority of clients pay a contribution towards the cost of their journey. The scheme accepts travel tokens and concessionary passes.

The Transport Scheme provides a means for these people to get out and about. Requests for help can come from a variety of sources, and may be on a regular or one-off basis.

The transport provided involves volunteer drivers using their own cars and receiving a mileage allowance and expenses. In addition we insure volunteer drivers against the loss of their no claim bonus and for accident excess.
