Rutland Morris was founded in 1974 with its origins in the folk dance clubs in the area. Prior to that time, and in particular in the years between the wars, Morris dancing was a common activity in the local schools, and a Morris dancing 'side' is believed to have existed in Caldecott in the early part of the century. The Rutland Morris Men were welcomed into the national 'Morris Ring' in 1978, and have since sought to ensure that the Morris dancing tradition remains alive and well in Rutland. In 1983 we organised a dancing tour of all the villages in Rutland in a single weekend, and in 1995 hosted a national meeting of the Morris Ring which attracted over 150 dancers from all parts of the country. We frequently travel to national dancing meetings all over the country and are proud to be linked to the historic county of Rutland. Surplus funds raised during the year are always donated to a local charity - preferably an unfashionable one! In the style of most Morris clubs Rutland Morris have a 'Squire' who leads the club (in theory!), a 'Bagman' who acts as secretary, and in our case a 'Bagman's Assistant' who counts our money! We also have a 'Foreman' who acts as trainer and club bully. |
