Paul Wright: My People

12 January - 17 February. Private view with the artist: 11 January 4pm - 8pm

Event: Portrait Painting with Paul Wright Saturday 27 January 10am – 4pm. Booking essential.

Paul Wright is a portrait painter whose signature technique have quickly earned him a reputation as an up and coming portrait artist.

Austin Healey Aimee Eddie Isaacs OBE

Paul was recently selected by BBC1 to appear on Star Portraits with Rolf Harris; a programme about three distinct portrait painters and a celebrity sitter. The programme will air on a Sunday 7pm in January.

The exhibition focuses on his current collection of portraits of family, friends and interesting faces. Portraiture is his main area of working since Paul's interest lies in an intriguing face or a special relationship. However his attention does occasionally shift to other subjects, such as the qualities found in a person's shoes or clothing.

Paul’s skills were appreciated earlier this year whe he was included for the first time in the BP National Portrait Award and taking part in BBC 1's Star Portraits with Rolf Harris.

Paul Wright works to commission, he lives and works in Leicester. For more information about the artist visit www.paul-wright.com

All work is for sale.

Face of Rutland Award Winner

The official handover of the ‘Face of Rutland’ portrait took place on the last day of term. The portrait of Joy Gregg was presented by Alan Duncan MP to Captain Vijay Dighe, chief executive of Rutland County Council at Oakham Castle. A large crowd of well-wishers and council members attended to witness the first ‘Face of Rutland’ portrait be unveiled. The artist Paul Wright (who exhibited at Catmose Gallery in January) was thrilled with the response to his work.

Joy's range of volunteering includes setting up the Citizens Advice Bureau 30 years ago, the Volunteer Bureau, Rutland Age Concern and Oakham Town Partnership. She was also mayor in 1999-2000, a meals-on-wheels helper with WRVS and is currently vice-chairman of Oakham United Charity and member of the Rutland Three Arts.

The other judges were: Peter Jones, Philip Ennis, Julie Emberton, Paul Clark, Chris Parsons, Peter Lawson, Richard Adams, Lawrence Howard, Sandra Hayes, Brian Nichols, Mary Lloyd.
The award was funded by Rutland County Council and organised by Vale of Catmose College, Oakham Town Partnership and Arts For Rutland.

Heads
23 February - 14 April
Private view:  22 February 4pm - 8pm

Continuing our seasonal survey of the portrait, the Catmose Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of works by twenty-three prominent contemporary artists, in association with the internationally renowned gallery Flowers East.

The works brought together in this exhibition reveal how these artists have taken the head-as-subject beyond formal portraiture to embody the spirit of the social and political.

"It is not that the head lacks spirit; but it is a spirit in bodily form, a corporeal and vital breath." Gilles Deleuze

The diverse works shown here simultaneously endorse Gilles Deleuze’s claim that the head embodies a vital and affirmative artistic spirit, whilst dramatically undoing it through confronting the spectre of death, the dualism of mind and body, and the beguiling ciphers of media imagery amongst other complex themes.
