Castle Mound

Fotheringhay Castle Site

.

Fotheringhay Castle is thought to have been originally constructed of timber in 1100, by Simon de St. Liz, 1st Earl of Huntingdon and Northampton. It is best known as the site where Mary Queen of Scots was executed on 8th February 1587, at the age of 44. All that remains of the castle in Fotheringhay is a piece of Fotheringhay Castle keep, now surrounded by railings. Embedded in the stone is a plaque to Mary Queen of Scots, with whom the castle will always be associated. To this day, large Scottish thistles still grow on the evocative castle mound – a poignant reminder of her tragic death.
