The first league game for Oakham was an excellent one. It would be the second if there other game was not cancelled, but they still got the points.
Oakham started the match with the mentality of warriors. They were up for this game more than any other, and were ready to overpower the opposition with strength and aggression. Oakham kicked off in the first half with a try within the first 5 minutes from Richard Whitemoore to get Oakham off to a flying start. This was unfortunatly not converted.
Oakham were dominating the first half with agression in the rucks and around 80% of the territory which showed a very convincing first half. Richard went forward to score a second try to get Oakham in the lead by 10 points, this was not converted. Oakham backs moves were working like a dream, this is due to hard work and some help from the senior coaches Chris Howe and U17 coach Steve Reid.
Tom Archer sealed off a great forwards performance with a converted converted try underneath the posts. Tom Archers kicks under pressure gained Oakham a lot of ground which helped the team a lot.
Unfortunatly a Syston player had to be stretchered off injured with a trapped nerve in his leg during a maul which collapsed which caused it to spasm. The forwards were working their way through Systons defense and Pat Hallam scored his first ever try which gave Oakham a considerable edge when the whist sounded.
Syston managed to get a penalty kick just as the half time whistle sounded. (End of first half score 22 - 3)
Oakham started the second half not as convincingly as the first giving away penalties but then got back on track and dominated the game. Rob Montgomery flew past the opposition to score a magnifent try from the half way line which was then converted by Tom Archer.
Will Hutchins crunched the opposite numbers to score a well deserved try. It was obvious that Oakham were by far, the better team on the day and well deserved the win. To top off a very successful game Ross Connon managed to dive over the line and score a try, this put the icing on the cake for Oakham, a great league win, 3 points. (Final Score 44 - 8)
