Ashwell Village is situated 2 miles from Oakham and takes it's name, according to W.G. Hoskins, from the Ash lined stream nearby. There are a number of local challenges to the reasoning behind the name of Ashwell, mainly due to the fact that Ashwell was not the original name for the village. However, it is generally accepted that there is some truth to W.G. Hoskins thinking.
Ashwell prison is the first building you come to when travelling from Oakham but is actually not part of Ashwell Parish. Further on down the road you come to the village of Ashwell, which has retained its beauty and charm from times past. Although the railway runs close by, Ashwell does not have a station. It can however boast one of Rutland's few remaining 'Request Railway Crossings' where travellers have to manually press a button to request the opening of the crossing gates.
Ashwell's current population is approximately 200, with many of those being 'commuters' who work in local towns and cities, a few still 'work the land'.
Ashwell is served by bus route 19 (Nottingham - Melton Mowbray - Oakham)
