Like many I have started to trace my family history - with some difficulty. I would like to know if there are any members of the Cramp Family still residing in or around Cottesmore. My grandmother was a Lydia Cramp who moved away at the turn of the century and it is thought the family were probably farm labourers or had some connection as domestics with Burley House. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

My father served RAF 1941-46, later as a civilian for 360 sqdn at Watton.
anyone remember his time.
1967-69.
Cliffy Brooks....

On there leaving of Watton, my father was awarded a pewter mug inscribed
with the emblem, 'Cliffie' No 360 RN/RAF Squadron. Jan 67-April 1969. My father was also asked to join in the Squadron photo, which included him, he was proud. I still have these two picutres taken at Watton, he was also given other items which included the sqdn emblem.

Later when my late mother had heard of the disbandment of 360, she wrote a letter to the sqdn, where she recieved a reply, along with signitures of the members on the print of the Canberra T.17.

Just thought I would like to share this info with some one with hopefully a common interest.

I served on 360 Squadron at Cottesmore in the early 1970's. If anyone from that time wishes to get in touch I have a few contacts with other squadron members and it is always nice to remember the good times.

I have some very pleasant memories of Cottesmore. My fathers aunt lived in a thatched cottage just by the church her name was Mary the daughter was Nelly and I was told Mary's husband was killed by a horse at the Cottesmore hunt stables. Nelly had an inkwell made from the horses hoof, she lived at 9, Gainsborough Court, The Leas in the main street. I am sorry I cannot remember their surname. I am now 71 and I believe when I was very small a goat tossed me around the field behind the church.

I was based RAF Cottesmore 1971 to 1973. Worked at the Dental Centre for Sqn Ldr Peter Boyd (who, I believe, later settled in Uppingham). It was a great 3 years on & off the base & many of the people RAF & otherwise still remain in contact with. To Sydney..... John & Anne Giles; Tony & Beryl Say(Sgts Mess) to Brisbane.... Chas & Margaret Lapthorne, Christchurch New Zealand & i'm sure many more. If you know of more living here, give them my email address/web site. I'd really like to make contact with Cpl(then) Gerry & Izzy Linstead who went from Cottesmore to Cyprus. Great place Cottesmore when George kept the sun in Cottesmore village & we had the harvest festivals in the pub & the vicar played his trumpet. Anne Hibbett (nurse at the Med Centre) with Husband Robin, Sqn Ldr Navigator on 360 Squadron...... they used to live in John Tregorran's (the Archers) place just up the road. Do you remember the cricket matches when it wasn't unusual for an orange to be substituted for the ball & bowled full toss:The result being a win for the hosts. The memories flood back. Christmas Carrols on the back of the trator with the euphonium siting on bales of hay, out to Market Overton & Greetham.... Chris Morton at the Black Horse was always keen to oblige the best & warmest voices in Rutland on those cold snowy nights. Such memories.Warming the corners of my growing up...

If possible I would like some information on a gentleman that was killed during WWII, he was Pilot Officer (100059) George Joyce Matthews, RAF Volunteer Reserve, he was killed on the 17 August 1941 and is remembered on the memorial. I am presuming that he was related to some of the Matthews family buried in Empingham cemetary (one of the graves is named as David Joyce Matthews). The reason for asking this is that I am hoping to confirm that the middle name of Joyce is in fact George's mother's maiden name and this would make her Hannah Joyce of Morcott. If anyone can help or confirm then I would be most grateful, thank you.

What a beautiful village.Discovered your great site while chasing ancient relatives. An Anne Smith married a Kirkham from your village in the 1600s.She was a daughter of a famous entrepreneur from Leicestershire, named Erasmus Smith, but we lost track at that point till her family reappears in mid 1700s in N'Hants at a place called Fineshade.Do you have any Kirkhams still there ?We hope to see your lovely village one day soon, lovely site.
