MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Annual Town Meeting

The Annual Town Meeting will take place in The Town Hall at 7.30 pm on
Wednesday 18th April. All members of the electorate are welcome to attend and take part. The Council’s Annual Report will be available at the meeting. An agenda item for this meeting will be the future of primary education in Uppingham .
This year we have been busy with cemeteries. We have tidied up the land above the Lawn Cemetery, and are creating a wildlife area. We have at last, and only just in time, developed the new cemetery in the Leicester Road. By the time of the Annual Meeting the gates should be in place and the ground seeded
The Council is investigating a new lighting scheme for a small part of the town. No plans have been seen yet and certainly no decisions made. However, it could be the beginning of a gradual change in the street lighting over a number of years.
It is difficult to tell you what the Council will do next year because you, the electorate, may choose a completely different Council. What the present members hope to do is open the cemetery and start developing and planting a green burial area, perhaps start changing the lights, not spend too much of your money and try to keep Uppingham a pleasant and happy place to live.

Council Election Thursday 3rd May

All the places on the Council are to be filled at this election. Nominations closed earlier this month, but please, please come and vote. The Uppingham Town Council may not be the most important elected body in the world, but it is important in Uppingham. Do vote on May 3rd.
The Annual General Meeting of the Council will be at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 16th May. It will be the first meeting of the new Council and all the post holders will be elected. Everybody is welcome.
Colin Forsyth, Mayor.

COUNTY COUNCILLORS

Cllr Kenneth Bool 822996
Cllr Peter Ind 823570
Cllr Marc Oxley 822334

DOG FOULING
Dog fouling continues to be a problem in the town centre. The maximum fine for not cleaning up is £1,000.
Caught on camera is the person who let their dog defecate in the Town Hall car park.
Poop scoop bags are available free of charge from the Clerk’s office.

We need your views
Christmas lights
Last Christmas we decorated Baines Corner, put a tree in the Market Place and illuminated garlands across the High Street. Did you like them? Should we do something different? One idea is to do away with the garlands, decorate Baines Corner , Dairy Corner and the Market Place, encourage, and perhaps help, businesses to put small trees with lights or suitable
decorations on the front of their buildings and place another tree further down the High Street, possibly in front of the Town Hall, which would also be decorated. Another idea is to have no decorations at all.

Cemetery names
The new Leicester Road cemetery needs a name. One suggestion is ‘The Castle Hill Cemetery.’
Another suggestion is that the Lawn cemetery in London Road be renamed as a memorial to Edward Toon who gave the gates and was recently buried there.

On both these issues we want to know your views. Either let the Clerk know, or come to the Annual Town Meeting and tell us.

After previous publications many people said they could have told us more. So here is your chance before the event to contribute any material you might have.
