The Uppingham 1851 Census was transcribed from the microfilm census documents stored in Oakham & Uppingham libraries, by members of the Uppingham Local History Study Group. Led by Professor Alan Rogers, the group completed the transcript in January 2001 and a copy of the paper version has been deposited in the public libraries at Oakham and Uppingham. The transcription has been followed by the publication of a new book (March 2001) "Uppingham in 1851: A Night in the Life of a Thriving Town".

As part of the Rutnet Project, the transcription has been converted to enable online searches. Microfilm copies of the original census documents are available in Oakham and Uppingham libraries, the local Record Office in Leicester (0116-2571080) and at the Family Records Centre in Central London. The original documents are housed at the Public Records Office in Kew, Richmond, Surrey.
