Most spellings are as transcribed from the microfilm documents of the originals and as such may include original and/or unusual spellings of villages, counties and occupations. Similarly errors may have occurred in trying to read illegible entries (see disclaimer). In converting the transcription to enable web searching, "ditto" has wherever possible been replaced with the actual wording and some common abbreviations have been expanded. It is worth noting that the census is not necessarily consistent in the way things are spelt and often uses abbreviations. We suggest that if a 'modern' spelling returns limited results you also try alternative spellings. Additionally, shortening your search phrase to the first 3 or 4 letters of a word will also return more results.

All search results are returned as individuals. Click on the schedule number to view all individuals recorded on that particular schedule. The results cannot tell you whether more than one family resides at the same house (please refer to the microfilm documents or the totals section in the paper transcription).
The original census describes individuals with either "MaleAge" or "FemaleAge", but to enable on-line searches this has been converted to gender and age. Occasional comments added as footnotes in the transcript version have been included in the notes section.
For each record the following information is returned from a search:
Book No (refers to original census)
Schedule (refers to original census)
Street
Name
Relation to Head of Household (NB: may include visitor, servant, journeyman etc)
Status (generally Married, Unmarried, Widow or Widower. Entries for children are left blank)
Age (babies often appear as X months or weeks)
Gender (may include uncertainties where a person's name is not obviously male or female)
Occupation
Birthplace
BDD (Blind, deaf or dumb)
Notes (occasional comments on particular entries)
The Rutnet Project and the Uppingham Local History Study Group take no responsibility for errors or omissions in the data published on the website. For ease of conversion, all references to uninhabited or properties under construction have been removed. Similarly totals, as provided in the paper transcription, have also been removed. We recommend that for detailed research purposes you also refer to the paper transcription and microfilm versions of the original documents.
Where to Find Copies of the Original Census Documents
Microfilm copies of the original census documents are available in Oakham and Uppingham libraries, the local Record Office in Leicester (0116-2571080) and at the Family Records Centre in Central London.
