CONTEMPORARY LIFE DRAWING - with Nicholas Boon.

10-week course Starting Monday 14 January until 31 March.
Every Monday night in the art room 6.30pm – 9pm. £80 (£70 concs).

PAINTING PORTRAITS WORKSHOP With Paul Wright

Saturday 26 January, Saturday 17 May and Saturday 7 June
10am – 4pm: £30/£28 per person

This is a one-day course exploring portrait painting with portrait artist Paul Wright. The aim of this workshop is to show that through expressive use of paint a lively and exciting portrait can be achieved.

The day will begin with a demonstration and short talk about the different stages of building a portrait. Throughout the day students will work on a painting of their chosen subject. The workshop is suitable for adults of all abilities.

PAPIER MACHE CHARACTER WORKSHOP
With Julie Arkell

Saturday 2 February 2008
10am – 4pm Fee: £30/£28 per person

During this workshop Julie will demonstrate how to make her creatures, rabbits, dolls and animals. They are made from newspaper and glue, using old paper back books as the final covering. They often have wool embroidered faces and sometimes painted ones.

She will also bring a selection of knitting patterns to help you dress them. The trucks, cars and prams they travel in are made from cardboard, wire and wood. These we can construct too, as well as trees, houses, ladders, chairs and toadstools.


CORSET MAKING 1880s STYLE
With Abigail Haughton

Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th March 2008, 9am – 5pm
Fee: £80 / £70 per person

Make an 1880s corset over two days with seamstress Abigail Haughton.  The course aims to give an elementary understanding of pattern construction and the satisfaction of coming away with a wearable wonderful corset. A high level of accuracy and hand finish will be taught.

This course will require a high level of commitment from anyone wanting to do it and some experience of a sewing machine is essential.


MAKING MOSAICS With Satta Hashem

Make a mosaic from recycled ceramics and tiles with the gallery’s current exhibiting artist Satta Hashem (see exhibition page).

Cranach

This exhibition has been organised by the Royal Academy of Arts, London and the Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main. This is the first major survey in Britain devoted to Cranach. The exhibition will bring together a selection of some 70 works chosen to represent the quality and range of this important master, one of the most versatile artists of the German Renaissance.

From Russia: French and Russian Master Paintings 1870-1925

This landmark exhibition presents modern masterpieces drawn from Russia’s principal collections: The State Pushkin Museum and, The State Tretyakov Museum in Moscow and The State Hermitage, Museum and The State Russian, Museum in St. Petersburg. Over 120 paintings by Russian and French artists working between 1870 and 1925 will be displayed together for the first time ever in the United Kingdom, in an exhibition which surveys the main directions of modern art from Realism and Impressionism to Non-Objective painting.

From Russia is a testimony to the glorious history of Russian collecting and Russia’s influence in the development of modern art. The ground-breaking yet individual tastes of collectors Tretyakov, Shchukin and Morosov will be illustrated in the collections they bequeathed to Moscow and St. Petersburg, including paintings by Renoir, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin and Matisse together with those by Kandinsky, Tatlin and Malevich. This exhibition will be a unique  opportunity to explore the fascinating exchange that existed between French and Russian art during a crucial period that was witness to upheaval and revolution.

SEAMLESS PURSES AND BAGS WORKSHOP With Heather Belcher

Saturday 26 April 2008 10am – 4pm

Inspired by the traditional seamless felt coats made by the nomadic people of Central Asia, in this workshop you will make a seamless felt bag or purse with no stitching.

Heather Belcher is an experienced artist working with the medium of hand made felt. She exhibits her work regularly throughout the UK and internationally and has work in several Public Collections including the Crafts Council. In 2004 she was awarded a Research and Development Grant from Arts Council England to travel to Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia to study traditional felting techniques. During the workshop she will show images and talk about this trip. Heather is exhibiting ‘Stuff; contemporary textiles by The 62 Group.


EXPERIMENTAL WEAVING WORKSHOP With Lucy Brown

Saturday 10 May 2008 10am – 4pm

The workshop would introduce basic techniques of weave and allow participants to experiment with these techniques. Participants would be encouraged to use both conventional and non-conventional materials to weave with.

Have you ever wondered just HOW a Portrait Head is done?
This one day taster class will give you the basics....... from how to form the underlying structure, to the small secret details which will actually make it look like the model in front of you!
If you've already tried before, come along and improve your technique! Each student will receive individual tuition, according to experience and ability, so why not come along and let Mo Gardner prove just how easy it can be? The workshop is suitable for adults of all abilities.
Mo is exhibiting in our Figures and Faces exhibition.

PAINTERLY MONOPRINTS with Henrietta Corbett

Saturday 14th June 2008: 10am – 4pm
Fee: £30 / £28 per person

On this day course Henrietta will show you the spontaneous process of monoprinting. Utilising rolling, wiping and masking techniques you will be encouraged to be expressive and experimental with colour and composition. You will be shown a variety of techniques, applying both press and non-press methods and in building up your image through the use of overprinting you will create vibrant monoprints with vivid, painterly effects.

JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTING with Pete Dobson

Saturday 4th October 2008: 10am – 4pm
Fee: £30 / £28 per person

With their fluid lines, intricate carving and delicate colours, Japanese prints are still as fascinating as ever. On this day course you will learn the beautifully refined technique of Japanese Woodblock Printing. You will be shown how to transfer your desired image onto the woodblock and carve with specialist tools to create a multitude of marks. Once the block is prepared you will proof and print this fascinating relief process without the use of a press. Using a blended watercolour wash for the background you will be shown how to overprint in a single colour using the hand burnishing technique, producing unique and authentic woodblock prints.
