DRY POINT PORTRAIT PRINTING WORKSHOP With Henrietta Corbett of Leicester Print Workshop
Saturday 10 February, 10am 4pm. £33/£30 pp
Workshop Explanation: Dry point is a direct intaglio technique. The tool usually used is a sharp tool with a steel point. Varying the pressure on the tool causes a variation in the depth and width of the lines that after printing will yield a more or less rich effect on paper. Tone can also be gained with the use of wire wool or sandpaper. In this technique, the burrs created by the pressure of the point are left to hold the ink, giving a soft, thick printed line which is the main characteristic of this style. The portraiture subject of the workshop is linked into the current Paul Wright exhibition of portraits. If you wish to choose another subject this is possible. The outcome of the day will be most valuably learning about printing in general and specifically how to make a dry point print, and taking home a professionally executed print.
CARBORUNDUM WORKSHOP With CATHERINE HEADLEY of Leicester Print Workshop
Saturday 10 March, 10am 4pm. £33/£30 pp
Workshop Explanation: Carborundum printmaking is a versatile and exciting means of creating rich printed imagery. In this one day course, well-known artist and expert printer Catherine Headley will show you how to combine elements of carborundum, collagraph and dry point to make a stunning print that is rich in tonal qualities. Throughout the day you will be shown how to design, cut, proof and print using this fascinating and extremely popular process.
Collagraph is a printmaking technique that operates, as the name suggests, on the basis of collage of built up textured papers, whilst the dry point mark-making will provide clear lines. The addition of a mixture of carborundum grit, an industrially produced substance, produces a deep black tone, giving your print a rich velvety surface.
