The VCC Book Club

The Book Club is open to students and staff and is held in the Learning Resources Centre on Tuesday lunchtimes at 12.35pm. Over the past couple of weeks, we have read two books:- Angel by Cliff McNish and Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver. In the club, we discuss various aspects of the books like the themes and characters. Both books are available to borrow from the Learning Resources Centre.

Poetry Picnic

Thursday 9 October was National Poetry Day and to celebrate a Poetry Picnic was held in the Learning Resources Centre at lunchtime.

About 25 students and staff sat on blankets and bean bags, munching sweets and biscuits, having a laugh whilst listening to poetry written by students and staff, as well as reading poetry from books.

A request was made for another event, perhaps at Christmas? Watch this space!

A unique Christmas Present?

Friday 21 Nov

I would like to invite all parents and student to attend a book signing by Ross Baker.

Ross, a former student of the Vale of Catmose, published his first novel in September 2008 and he will be signing copies of The Fable of Mythrian book 1, on Friday 21 November, between 3.30pm - 5.30pm in the Gallery at the College.

The novel has been written in the tradition of Lord of the Rings and Earthsea and is a timeless adventure story that will appeal to all ages (RRP £13.99).

To avoid disappointment of those who need to get the college buses at the end of the day, Ross can sign books that have been pre-ordered. If you wish to accept this offer, please complete the order form in Contact and send payment of £10 for each book ordered. Any cheques should be made payable to Ross Baker, and the payment and order form should be placed in an envelope addressed as Ross Baker book order, with the student's name and tutor group clearly marked, and returned to the Learning Resources Centre by Thursday 20 November.

Come along and meet Ross and purchase a copy of his book. Further information about Ross and his book can be found on his website http://www.rossdanielbaker.com/node

Reviews on Angel

Sofia Chowdry (7AAP) - Angel is about a girl called Freya and she can see Angels. A good Angel comes to visit her one day but his beauty overcomes her and she becomes mad. But she went back to school and she was soon in the coolest gang. She soon starts to see another angel, a dark Angel, and she is frightened to death by him. She convinces herself that he isn't real. But then a new girl, Stephanie, comes with all this talk about Angels. Soon two new problems arrive, one including her Dad and another including her brother. But then the good Angel comes with good news, and soon she has her own pairs of wings. But will she have to sacrifice her own life to save Stephanie and her brother? Will the good Angel survive? Will Freya survive?

Emmie Murch (7AAP) - I would recommend this book to my friends because it's so unpredictable and really thoughtful to real life situations. Also there is a range of events in the book, such as school scenes and scenes in houses. There are also happy and sad moments in the book. Teenagers can also really enjoy this book because Freya is a teenager who is experiencing things most teenagers experience. Most of the teenagers are at school, however, to create a more imaginative story, there is a twist with Freya seeing Angels.

Grace Ray (7KH) - This book is for all those who like horror, action and adventure. It starts when a girl called Freya is visited by an Angel. After years and years of hospital treatment, she is finally back to her normal self in a school with her supposed friends, Amy, the ringleader and minor school bully, and her two minions, Vicky and Gemma. But her brother, Luke, also has problems. He's defending a helpless boy called Sam from a bully who's not afraid to do things he thinks people deserve, and he's got some really devious ideas. But Luke is hiding something from Freya and she knows. Things can only get worse. Then this strange girl called Stephanie turns up and Amy takes an instant disliking to her. Time after time she embarrasses herself in class raving on about Angels, which burrows deep into Freya's past. Amy is really giving her a hard time, insulting her inside and out. Suddenly Freya has more problems. The Angels are back, with the most frightening one yet; it's a dark Angel and it is coming for her. Stephanie is learning more about Freya and wants to be there for her, but Freya is not able to tell her everything, and Amy is getting suspicious.....This book is a real page turner and you just can't put it down. There are boys, bullies and beautiful Angels and also a side order of running and chasing. I would really recommend this book to girls in their own fantasy world!
